I’ll say it—I was one of those anxious FTMs (first time mom). You know that girl. Worried all the time about the invisible dangers that lurk everywhere. So, naturally, this also applied to breastfeeding.I was so concerned about nipple confusion, that I didn’t even realize I was missing that teeny window when I could still introduce a bottle without my baby wondering what in the world I was trying to put in her mouth.
My first became one those special kind of babies who refused every bottle known to man. So, at six months, when I began introducing foods, I nervously bought her first sippy cup—a Playtex® Sipsters® Stage 1 Straw Cup. I really was having my doubts about how I was going to get my girl to transition to drinking from me to something else. I don’t want to overstate this, but this sippy cup was a revelation. An epiphany. For the first time, she drank from something that wasn’t me, and she loved it! I couldn’t believe how easy it was after all the struggles we had with bottles. It literally took one time of me showing her what to do, and she was off. She loved the straw, she loved holding the easy grip handles and most of all, she loved shaking the water around inside the cup.

Isn’t it amazing how babes always seem to find fun with things the one way you don’t want them to? Like running with scissors. Or smashing the remote on the coffee table. Or bike with no pants on. No? Just mine? Fair enough. My girl loved shaking sippy cups for fun. So being the worried mama I was, the first time I watched her do this, I immediately pictured someone slipping in the big puddle I was sure she was creating. I rushed over to mop it up, but quickly realized not even one drop of liquid escaped despite her best efforts. Win-win. How often does that happen!? Oh, and did I mention that Playtex® Sippy Cups are perfect for nighttime drinks? Now that my daughter is older, she likes to have water at night (especially in the summer in our non-air conditioned house).
These are the only sippy cups I’ve found that don’t leak all over her bed.
This was the first step in a lot of steps of our munchkin gaining independence, but such a memorable one. It’s amazing how something so small can make such a difference in the life of a first-time parent.
