Make Playtime Fun and Get Creative With Lego

Written by Jennifer Traynor

When it comes to toys one item that has stood the test of time and has been a favourite for generations is Lego building blocks and sets.

I remember spending many hours as a child playing with Lego and making all sorts of creations. Now as a mother I may have moments when I curse Lego, like when my kids leave them all over the floor and I step on them (ouch!) but I still to this day love Lego and really enjoy seeing my son and daughter having fun with it too.

If you are new to buying Lego for your kids then allow me to offer some advice, if I may. With the abundance of different sets to choose from it can be a rather intimidating shopping experience. So my suggestion is to start off simple. Here are some great sets that make a perfect introduction to Lego for your little ones:

Lego Duplo

These blocks are bigger in size and great for toddlers or preschoolers. My top choice is the Creative Play All-in-One-Box-of-Fun. It comes with an assortment of blocks in different shapes, sizes and colours, as well as pieces like windows, doors and even plants for your child to get extra creative. Other great Lego Duplo options are any of their My First sets, like the My First Playhouse, My First Farm or the My First Train set.

Lego Classic

These are the classic building blocks we know and love. To start off your collection there are three sizes of Lego Classic Creative Brick boxes in small, medium and large. These come with a variety of sizes, shapes and colours of bricks, providing many options for the imagination.

Once your child has become a Lego building pro you can move on to one of many sets available from Lego Juniors, Lego City, Lego Creator or Lego Friends to name a few.
