Use an old Frame to Make this Fun DIY

Written by Melissa Robertson

It’s easy to add some personality and style to your bathroom with this simple DIY that gets the whole family involved! Check out the latest from our resident crafty mom.

Growing up I found a deep love for everything second-hand. From spending my summer mornings waking up at the crack of dawn to scour the local garage sales (my mom loved to collect antique silver) and my father’s love for getting a great deal, second-hand shopping became a natural fit.

As a parent, I love taking my girls on a good old-fashioned treasure hunt and teaching them the importance of recycling and repurposing items. On such a recent jaunt I found myself drawn to a second-hand frame. Although I had a different project in mind initially, I knew that frames can be repurposed for many different purposes and are a great item to DIY.

Inspired by this recent project, where I made a photo collage for our living room, I decided to create this cheeky photo project for our guest bathroom.

All you need:

  • A frame (you only need the outside and can choose the size according to the size of your family)
  • A hot glue gun
  • Paint (optional but stylish)
  • Antique wax (if you are after a vintage vibe)
  • String
  • Mini clothespins

Our home has a vintage farmhouse vibe, so I decided to paint the frame white and then add an antique wax to add a distressed finish to it. This is simply to fit in with my current decor (lots of chalk paint DIY pieces) but you can paint to suit your own taste.

Add some antique stain.

Wipe off excess.

Voila! antique frame!

Once the frame was painted, treated and dry, I measured out to place four 4×6 photos within the frame. With a family of five, it made sense for my husband and me to share a photo spot.

Once I had measured out for space, I glued the string across with a hot glue gun and made sure to keep the string tight.

Now for the fun part!

I had each of my girls make a shocked or laughing face and took a photo to be printed out. My husband and I took a turn as well.

We printed the photos out for about $1.50 and attached them to the string using mini clothespins.

Viola! Your guests will now be treated to this fun DIY art piece each time they use your commode. It’s a cheap and fun way to make the bathroom a little more fun for everyone!
