It was awfully thoughtful of my 4-year-old daughter to come down with croup on precisely the night I was reviewing the Vicks® Filter-Free Cool Mist Humidifier. How did she know? Panda had been sniffly for a few days, but hey, that’s cold and flu season. When the telltale barking cough started at bedtime, though, I thought, “Okay, here’s the test. Better plug in that new humidifier.”
So, plug it in I did, once I’d filled the 3.8L (1 gallon) capacity tank, added the Vicks® VapoPad to the special compartment, and slathered a good amount of Vicks® Baby Rub on P’s chest and back. Her whole room soon smelled like what I imagine the inside of a glacier on a pine-covered mountain would smell like: crisp, cool and soothing.
A couple of cranky wake-ups and check-ins later, her room had reached peak humidity—less pine glacier, more eucalyptus rainforest.
Cranking up the humidifier resulted in an impressive stream of visible mist that I could point in any direction, so I aimed that toward her bed and hoped for the best. Panda finally settled and slept for a solid few hours. I think my husband must have snuck in and refilled the water tank at some point because it was on maximum moisture output for most of the night. But refilling doesn’t take much effort with the easy-grab handle on the tank. The machine is also super quiet—even the dial doesn’t click when you turn it on. Plus, no filters to change or replace. That gets a thumbs up.
Cold and flu season can be so stressful with little kids. Finding something to alleviate their symptoms helps everyone get a better night’s sleep.
